Jump to a Storyline:

I'd not originally planned to make a comment on this, but a number of folks have been confused. This is a top-down view, and the chicken on the ground is very much dead.

Like many of my strips, this is based at least in part on real life. When I was younger, we kept chickens. We had a rooster and five hens. The next year, we got six more chickens, and it turned out three were roosters. After they got about 5 months old, our old rooster killed them over three nights, one per night. We'd just find a dead chicken on the floor, no blood or sign of a struggle. He'd just spurred them in the night, they never know what hit them.

That's what happened here. Sorry for the confusion.
